The engineering idea did not stand still. The launches of artificial satellites, the orbital flights of cosmonauts and astronauts, the preparations for landing on the moon — it seemed that the rapid space expansion had already begun. Science fiction writers and futurologists of the 1960s were sure that within the next few decades, Earthlings would reach neighboring planets and asteroids, deploy habitable bases there and begin preparing for an interstellar expedition.
