Bale Awi is a casual eatery located in Teras Cikapundung Complex, Bandung. Positioned near Cikapundung River, the building mass is shaped fluidly to follow the curve of the river.
The shape of the building is inspired by curled leaf of the ketapang tree, a local tree that grows around the design site. Using shapes found in nature, the design aims to create a mass that blends with its surroundings and fits nicely with the contours of the existing landscape. Bamboo is chosen as the main material as it allows extreme arch shape. In line with it's flexibility, bamboo has good mechanical properties, inexpensive, and is considered to be more sustainable than other building materials such as wood or concrete.
