Skin cancer is the most popular type of cancer in America, but it is also one of the most curable. Most skin cancers are nonmelanoma, which means that they do not form in the melanocytes. Melanoma, on the other hand, forms in the melanocytes, and it is a very rare type of cancer.

Fundamentally, skin cancer is caused by exposure to UV light. Ultraviolet light from tanning beds or sunlight can cause damage to the skin’s DNA. If one’s skin’s DNA is changed, it cannot control skin cell growth properly, leading to cancer. People who have a history of sunburn are prone to cancer. Also, people who have light skin, hair, and eye are more susceptible to skin cancer. The less pigment you have in your skin, the higher the chances of getting skin cancer. In addition, older people and those who live in hot climates are generally more likely to have skin cancer.
