Lord of the Rings inspired Textiles

Second Year Project
On the theme of Journeys
We started out with the theme Journeys and were told we could persue it in any direction we wanted, so after some thinking and brain storming I chose to base my project on Lord of the Rings, because it is a pretty epic journey and there was a lot of different ways I could go about it.  I chose to base my project on just the first film and after watching it I was inspired by the Evlish designs so thats where my project took off.

I started with drawing from observations of jewellery designs in an elvish pattern, then made up my own patterns based around these designs.  I didnt want my end product to look elvin so had to manipulate them.

Below you can see my thought pattern, I do have a lot of other designs aswell, but Ive only put up one route so you can see what I did.  I began with a simple motif then built it up by rotating and reflecting it to produce a variety of designs.  I then took these designs and produced different motifs from them, picking out certain parts of the lacey patterns to get them.

I've taken inspiration from Tord Boontje and his garland lights, so I took the new motifs I'd produced and set them on a garland so that when I laser cut it out of fabric it could be wound around a body to make an interesting garment.

From the garlands I was playing about on Illustrator and made up some circular pieces, which are very aesthetically pleasing and which once hung from the centre produce a delicate structure which doesn't look elvin.  I managed to accomplish making it not look Elvin while using Elvish style motifs, so it fits in with the theme.  However now I need to decide what colours to use and whether I'll combine fabrics together to show two different colours when its hung up.
