My first impressions of the roof of the Sistine Chapel left me awestruck. The rich golden hue of Michelangelo's work was to me what serious art was all about. At this time I was 11 or 12 years old. As the years rolled forward and the techniques of art restoration and cleaning became more advanced, all of a sudden the “golden hue” was wiped clean and Michelangelo’s true intent was revealed. The “golden hue” was the result of years of Catholics burning candles made out of only God knows what and air pollution which includes the breath of millions of tourist types. By the way, respiratory illness is caused by the same thing that destroys art. Us breathing on each other. Anyways, I digress. Getting back to the Sistine Chapel. When I chose to recreate this portion of the Sistine Chapel’s roof I thought it was going to be a quick and easy task. I underestimated what Michelangelo actually achieved. After a month of obsessing over this recreation I am humbled, again. Art for art’s sake.
