Particle Physics to Cosmology

The Higgs particle has been sought since 1973 when it was first proposed. In the summer of 2012 it was finally discovered. This artwork shows the vigorous shaking of the field needed for the Higgs particle to ‘pop’ out. The discovery of the Higgs Boson particle is an important first step towards understanding the 96% of our universe that is made up of dark matter and dark energy, the 96% that still remains mysterious and unknown.
Big Bounce Universe: An illustration of the universe being created through the "Big Bounce" theory. Two sheet-like surfaces, called branes, collide and separate, which results in a massive amount of energy. The resulting minute ripples gradually form the particles of matter, eventually coalescing into galaxies.
A three-dimensional black hole can be mapped out via a two-dimensional projection.
Superstring theory describes particles and forces as tiny vibrating strands and loops in an attempt to unify gravity with quantum mechanics.
