Project 4 (Burma Shave)

For our fourth project, we had to create a double-gate fold that included a four letter word that is chromatic in the center of the Burma Shave. This project is a continued but separate from the Sins and Virtues, the goal of this project is to create a Burma Shave that is connected to our Sins or Virtues. Connected more on the theme but when opened, the intended images and quote will help guide the viewer to determine the meaning. The quote I chose is "“There is no light without shadow, just as there is no happiness without pain.” — Isabel Allende. There really isn't any personal reason why I chose the quote, it was the closest quote that was sinful when I was trying to find a quote that incorporation light and darkness.

For this project I chose a quote that incorporated light and darkness since my theme is surrounded by Japanese cities like neon signs and lights. Pretty much the environment itself is very colorful in Tokyo so I found a quote that had that charisma. The origins of the quote was from Isabel Allende who is a Chilean writer and movie director who wrote many books like "The House of the Spirts" and "Paula".

Images that I used are based on more the modern city life and the vibrant color palette used during the night. My theme remains the same but the meaning behind the Burma Shave is separate from my Sins project. The Burma Shave compares light and darkness, they're nonexistent without each other just like happiness is without pain.

You can checkout my dropmark here. Images used are from unsplashed.com besides the inner fold, that image is from ceylontoday.lk. Burma Shave is 28 x 18' Final size and printout.

There Is NO Light - I used only a black background to emphasize the beginning quote. Also, changing the color of the type to a gradient to match the colors palette.
Without Shadow Just as... There Is No Happiness... - Moved the type and changed the color to emphasize the text and bring contrast.
Without Pain - Without is small but noticeable, the main attention is the word "Pain". Notice that the outside of the Burma Shave is colorful and bright while the inside is black and white. The Burma Shave itself has contrast as well as its meaning.
