Die erwachsenen Tiere vieler Arten ernähren sich hauptsächlich von Nektar und Pollen, während die Larven ein breiteres Nahrungsspektrum haben. Schwebfliegen sind weltweit verbreitet, es gibt sie auf allen Kontinenten mit Ausnahme der Antarktis.
