Concept Map Research and Visualization

Concept Map Research and Visualization
This design project was completed my first semester sophomore year in college. We worked to develop our skills in research and information organization as well as visual communication. I chose the topic of calculation technology to research. We began the project by writing a Literary Review paper detailing the research we completed on our subject. We were then tasked to visual organize all that research, first into a black and white concept map.
Below is my final black and white version of my concept map. We focused on outlining four main subtopics within our research: history, people, practices, and settings. A lot of focus was placed onto layout and visual organization to create a concept map that most effectively communicated the information to the reader. One big component of this is hierarchy, which I used in this map to articulate an order of importance and relativity amongst information.
After completing the black and white version we were tasked with completing a colorized map. This map was meant to also utilize imagery if we wanted. I also chose to take a stronger direction on this map with the 'story' I was communicating from my research. I wanted to communicated the changes over time in calculation technology and how that effected students' learning and education in schools. I did this by structuring the map with the timeline of technologies at the bottom of the map as change over time was a big component in my communication. The large central graphic holds the main idea of the map, visualizing the idea that math education was able to convert itself from memorization to application based learning, as technology advanced.
