I designed this logo for RSPB's new seabird tracking research project.

 

Scientists and conservationists are hurrying up in all parts of the world to increase our knowledge of seabirds: not much is know about them and they are becoming more and more vulnerable to anthropic disturbances, wether it is around their breeding locations or on their wintering grounds. 

This project started - under another name - in the UK five years ago. Since then, thousands of GPS tracks have been collected from five species of seabirds, leading to a giant leap in the understanding of their ecology and foraging movements.

 

Stars have been used over and over for logos so the acronym of the project didn't facilitate the designing process. Here, I tried to integrate the typical search behaviour of a foraging seabird into the shape: the left branch of the star shows a "figure 8" turn often seen on the foraging tracks of seabirds. Here are some examples of potential usages.
