Itacoatiara
The Itacoatiara Beach is located in Niterói, neighboring Rio de Janeiro and is one of the so-called oceanic beaches, since many of the beaches of Niterói face Baia de Guanabara, with an incredible view of Rio de Janeiro, while the ocean beaches are open to the Atlantic Ocean.
Itacoatiara is a small beach, 750m long, squeezed between two rocky headlands. The beach receives from the front the SW winds that bring the cold fronts and the winter swells. At this time the waves can reach 5m in height, with a frightening mass of water breaking very close to the beach.
Amazingly, in the right corner of Itacoatiara, between a large rock that extends from the sand to the sea and the coast wall, there is a small beach of 20m that looks more like a swimming pool. There the children play in safety as the massive swells break alongside.
Due to these characteristics, Itacoatiara attracts more and more surf and body board championships every winter, which are attended by the greatest surfers in the world.
