Book design and layout (2020)- Collection of theatre plays "Cilvēkzvērs"
The collection of plays “Cilvēkzvērs” (or Human beast in english) includes ten original plays by 10 different authors, who won in the project “Lugu konkurss - Lugu krājums” - in the first competition in 2020. Represented authors are: Inga Ābele, Rodžers de Kūrs (pseudonym), Anna Rancāne, Egīls Šņore, Lelde Stumbre, Kristiāna Štrāle-Dreika, Aleksejs Ščerbaks, Aiva Birbele, Rūta Žeina (pseudonym), Elgars Čerņickis (pseudonym).
For this project all of the book design was mainly based on layout making and perfecting, and less on actual design. For the book cover we chose one of the paintings from artist Marie Lein. "Maska / Le Masque", reminding us of an owl, was the perfect fit for the word "zvērs" or animal in the book title, as well as the painting itself is interesting and eye-catching.
To mach the cover and give a little interest, we chose the first decorative pages to be yellow. All thought it seems casual, this colorful spread works same as the curtain in the theatre - it separates actors and the play on the stage from all the viewers sitting on the other side. It welcomes the book readers to step into the theater play world.
For the layout part, the main thing was to chose easily readable font size and typeface, and put all of the information in right orders.
