Making It - Love Collection by Deadgood Studio

The Love Chair is a favourite from the ‘Deadgood Hall of Fame’ and one of the best selling items in the Collection. It’s not hard to see why many have fallen head over heels for it!

The story begins in 2009 when renowned North East furniture retailer Barker and Stonehouse, invited Deadgood to create a range of furniture and accessories for the company.

Barker and Stonehouse traditionally attracted very diverse customers and our Deadgood Directors and sole designers for the company at that time, wanted to unify all of those customers with a collection which connected everyone. Taking inspiration from New York City, they found an idea in the famous “I heart NY” graphic by Milton Glaser and the pair set about creating a stand out collection, based on a theme which everyone can relate to – “Love”.

The design of the Love Chair was inspired by the rich heritage of the North East of England (where Barker & Stonehouse have their roots) and the styling drew direct influence from the beautiful Georgian architecture that surrounded them in Newcastle. The leg detail in particular is common to the Georgian period. Once designed, the pair sought the very best in British upholsterers to take their vision through to production.
The Love Chair instantly became a triumph of quality British manufacturing and has been produced for commercial clients in four different sized options. The product has featured in many magazines including Elle Decoration, Living Etc. and Homes & Gardens, alongside this it has been specified for BBC offices, Reading University, Manchester Airport and was even featured as part of an installation at the Vivienne Westwood Flagship store in Milan last month (April 2013).Barker and Stonehouse traditionally attracted very diverse customers and our Deadgood Directors and sole designers for the company at that time, wanted to unify all of those customers with a collection which connected everyone. Working closely with a quality maker in Norfolk, the Love Chair was born. Frame developer Steve Hawkins, who had more than 30 years experience in designing upholstery frames, regarded the job as one of the most complex he had come across at the time. The intricate detailing meant that a new type of frame needed to be developed.
As tough as the job was, Steve insisted that form should not be compromised and taught himself AutoCAD to push the project ahead. Utilising the latest CNC technology, a first class frame was developed and built out of Plywood. A firm rubber support was used at the front of the arm to improve wear resistance in high traffic areas and the Plywood frame was then wrapped in hessian. Finally layers of foam were added to provide comfort and form.
