Inclusive Wayfinding - LUMA Arles

LUMA Arles
Arles France

SEGD Merit Design Award 2023

The LUMA foundation opened in 2021 in Arles, in the south of France to support artistic creation in the fields of visual arts, photography, publishing, documentary films, and multimedia.
The parc designed by landscape architect Bas Smets creates a humid ecosystem reminiscent of the camargue region nearby.
La tour designed by Frank Gehry completes these spaces and offers new perspectives on the artistic programming of the place.

The two inclusive models situated across the 11 ha site were designed to facilitate navigation of visually & mentally impaired visitors. the tactile models of the different buildings around the site are made to be seen or touched by everyone to help visitors from around the world represent the vast site in a clear manner.
Designed in collaboration with accessibility specialist tactile studio
Working in collaboration with artist Liam Gillick, we used his colour scheme, branding and illustrations to develop an inclusive model that can be touched by all visitors
The signage also developed by Liam Gillick & Guillaume Albot - All over, uses the same brightly coloured scheme and folded aluminium sheets
The curvy and soft landscape created by Bas Smets, is machined out of Corian, whilst the buildings are 3D printed and painted. Different textures are UV printed to make it clearly understood by the hand of visually impaired visitors - the whole model is hand fabricated and assembled in tactile studio workshop in pantin, france
Cheerful regards to LUMA team, Liam Gillick and Tactile Studio team for moving forward with inclusive wayfinding and signage.
