Risks for Atrial Fibrillation in Endurance Cyclists

Dr. Sanjiv M. Narayan is an entrepreneur who has devoted his career to better understanding atrial fibrillation. He has worked on technology startups and was the co-founder of a company to detect targets for ablation (Topera Medical) which are currently detected by Acutus medical Inc, Ablation Inc, CardioNXT Inc, RhythmAI Inc and other companies. A former professor of medicine at the University of California San Diego, Sanjiv Narayan, MD, Ph.D. is a leading Stanford cardiologist and has over 25 years of experience working with atrial fibrillation detection.

Rigorous cycling activity can damage the heart muscle and lead to a condition called myocardial fibrosis, which can eventually lead to atrial fibrillation (AF). For a hobbyist cyclist, the risks are similar to the general population. However, endurance cyclists suffer from a slightly increased risk of AF due to increased load on their heart during long legs.

Luckily, modern scanning systems developed after earlier systems (FIRM, focal impulse and rotor modulation) have become increasingly accurate at detecting the source of AF, allowing current driver-based ablation to treat the disorder effectively. Wearable sensors can then be used to monitor the person’s condition and alert them in real-time for any issues.

The risks of AF or similar conditions are still minor compared to the overall benefits of sporting activities. However, if you spot any symptoms, including shortness of breath, heart palpitations, and weakness not associated with fatigue, contact a cardiologist.
