Shower and Save Kit (S.A.S.K)

The Shower And Save Kit (also known as S.A.S.K.) is a 3 part shower system that helps users reduce their water consumption when showering and it can be installed into existing set-ups. Bluetooth chips within them allow them to communicate and execute their functions.

From my research, I found that climate change affects the weather, causing water distribution and rainfall timing to vary. This makes managing water resources challenging due to the unpredictability. In addition, I found that an average Singaporean consumes about 140 litres of water a day and the act of showering consumes the most amount of water within households. After conducting surveys on user behavior and preferences, I found that water is being consumed excessively and it can be reduced by practicing good shower habits.

The Kit includes a monitoring device, a soap holder and a showerhead. Each of these components have the following functions.
Monitoring Device
The monitoring device is a flow sensor that is programmed to decrease the flow rate of water when users leave the tap on but have the showerhead mounted on its stand. When it receives a signal from the soap holder, the flow rate of water becomes 0 when users try to dispense soap. It has an in-built hydroelectric generator which powers the device.
Wall mounted soap holder
When users dispense soap, a pressure sensor in the soap holder is triggered and signals the monitoring device to stop water flow. As about a third of 82 respondents to a survey I conducted said they do not turn off the tap during the process of applying soap, this feature will reduce water consumption when they do so.
Handheld Showerhead
When not held by a user, the touch sensor in the showerhead's handle sends a signal to the monitoring device to decrease the flow rate of water. When users hold it and contact is detected, the flow rate returns to normal. As the soap holder turns off the water completely, holding the showerhead will restore the flow rate to normal. A hydroelectric generator within the showerhead powers the components.
