Our project is based on the Gender Equality Index database, a statistical project of the European Institute for Gender Equality. This index is a composite indicator that measures the concept of gender equality and, based on the EU policy framework, helps monitor the progress of gender equality in the European Union over time. We chose this topic because we believe it is not yet widely discussed and also because we were curious to learn more about the European situation.

Il nostro progetto si basa sul database del Gender Equality Index, un progetto statistico dell’Istituto europeo per l’uguaglianza di genere. Questo indice è un indicatore composito che misura il concetto di uguaglianza di genere e, sulla base del quadro politico dell’UE, aiuta a monitorare i progressi dell’uguaglianza di genere nell’UE nel tempo. Abbiamo scelto questo tema perché crediamo che non sia ancora ampiamente discusso e perché eravamo curiose di conoscere meglio la situazione europea.

The paper is divided into five chapters, reflecting some of the domains analyzed by the Institute. Through a process of visual experimentation, we visualized these data using different visual elements and outside of the usual graphs and tables: lines, geometric shapes, typography, and colors. Comparing male and female values helps to understand and interpret the shapes.

L’elaborato si divide in cinque capitoli, che riflettono alcuni dei domini analizzati dall’Istituto. Attraverso un processo di sperimentazione visiva, abbiamo visualizzato questi dati utilizzando diversi elementi visivi e al di fuori dei soliti grafici e tabelle: linee, forme geometriche, tipografia e colori. La comparazione tra valore maschile e femminile aiuta a comprendere e interpretare meglio le forme.

The project was born as the final work of the course Digital Culture: Basil.JS, held by the professor Theodore Davis, during the Master ‘Visual Communication and Iconic Research’ of the Basel School of Design. With the Basil.js library we experimented the possibilities of extending Adobe InDesign through programming.
