COMFEST SCULPTURE [2012]

The Comfest Sculpture or Blue District was a commissioned piece by the fortieth annual Columbus Community Festival - a free, non-corporate, music and arts annual festival currently held each June at Goodale Park in the Victorian Village area of Columbus, Ohio.  The piece was destined to stand as a centerpiece, welcoming over sixty thousand attendees to one of the biggest celebratory events in the city.  Along with fellow artist, Logan Beach, we collected discarded furniture near the end of the school year on the campus of Ohio State.  Multiple couches, ottomans, and chairs were stripped of fabric and the remaining wood was used to complete the sculpture.  With relentless ambition, it was completed in only two days, relying only on the purchase of a single box of screws. This work is meant to represent the collective spirit and peaceful celebration that Comfest embodies.  The form stands over fifteen feet tall, allowing the work to communicate a tranquil presence above the viewer.  As a cultural icon, the peace sign is free of discrimination, welcoming any viewer to the heart of one of our city’s proudest traditions.  To mark the fortieth anniversary, roman numerals were chiseled into the reverse side of the sculpture.
