OUR INCREASING DEPENDENCE [2011]

Our Increasing Dependence is a performance piece and accompanying hand-written documentation/installation.  The piece is largely conceptual.  A performance began forty days before the exhibition and continued through its duration.  I chose to neglect all interaction with my personal cell phone, eliminating any and all social contact through the device.  In doing this, I learned the reliance of technology through its absence, alternative forms of communication, and the calm awakening developed through disconnection and solitude.  The problem of displaying the performance arose and was surpassed through hand-written documentation with a day-to-day log of research and the emotions of friends, family, and myself.  The journal was set on a intimate desk intended for private study of the experiment.  The desk faced a strip of soundproofing (a product with the purpose of dampening acoustics and limiting communication) with a line graph of ingoing and outgoing calls and text messages created with pins and colored thread.  The remainder of string was left to suggest a continuation of the performance.  The wall display was solely meant to spark interest in the work and question the data, which was explained carefully in the writing.  High above everything, my phone was secured with duct-tape, on and out of reach.
