Helapa | Takeaway packaging for Sri Lankan sweets

Helapa  is a  Sri Lankan sweet made of Kurakkan (Finger millet) flour, coconut and palm treacle. This takeaway packaging was designed for Ceylon Tea truck Melbourne, Australia. The goal was to create a packaging in which, a Sri Lankan living abroad would proudly share their island delicacies with the rest of the world. Helapa is generally made wrapped in a Kenda (Macaranga Peltata) leaf. But as the leaf was not abundant in Melbourne, it was made for Ceylon tea truck using a foil. Therefore it was intended to recreate the look and feel of the Kenda leaf through packaging, for a wholesome Helapa  eating experience. Through a series of experiments on expressive typography, Sinhala letterforms are used to create familiarity and resemblance, while the unique product qualities such as the earthy feeling of the leaf, and grainy texture of Helapa are visualized.

Thank you!
