The Health Benefits of Jogging

Darrel Tracy Johnson is a Middletown, Delaware-based crisis manager. When he’s not assisting clients through the logistical challenges associated with crises, Darrel Johnson is a jogger in his spare time. Though jogging has tangible benefits, there are additional health considerations as well.

Jogging has physical and cognitive health benefits when performed as an aerobic exercise under six miles per hour. Regular exercise helps preserve spine flexibility as it worsens with age and is exacerbated by a lack of exercise. Jogging also improves the immune system to help fight off disease.

Jogging leads to cognitive benefits by lowering stress-inducing hormones. Otherwise, heightened levels lead to mental health conditions like depression. Cortisol releases when you experience stress. It increases your blood pressure and readies you to tackle a threat, even if that threat is not physical. A 2018 study in the journal Molecular Psychiatry found that people with depression who jogged for 12 weeks had lower cortisol levels than people in the study who did not.

Though jogging has multiple health benefits, it also carries some risks. Before beginning a jogging routine, talk to your doctor to ensure that it's an appropriate exercise for you. Find running shoes that provide the proper amount of padding, and check for blisters after a session. Run with good posture, standing up straight, rather than slumping your shoulders. This avoids unnecessary stress on your body and prevents injuries.
