WATERFRONT REVITALIZATION IN INDUSTRIAL CITY
type: Academic Project
location: Klaipėda, Lietuva
year: 2018
The impact of industry on the city and its waterfront in Klaipėda is unique. The still operating dock district could become the main element for the cities' waterfront revitalization by changing the usage of its territory. An opportunity to utilize no longer useful industrial dock elements, display them in a new unrecognizable scale and shape, could be an answer to the lost connection between Klaipėda city and the dock waterfronts. Giant freight ships, used for container transportation are mega-structures whose life span corresponds with their ability to generate economic value. This project presents the idea, that these massive structures could become adaptable and reusable elements, that would revitalize and change the perception of the city's waterfront, forming it as a public space.
