Illustration for Tech & Society Dialogues at Tandem
Tandem Research is an interdisciplinary research collective that generates policy insights at the interface of technology, society, and sustainability. Its work seeks to ensure that no one gets left behind in the technology transitions that will shape India’s future.
By now it is well known that AI systems developed in one context does not necessarily translate well to deployment contexts elsewhere. Yet, many countries in Asia and Africa, have become petri-dishes for ‘real life’ experiments in AI deployments.
Similarly, advances in AI research, which is largely concentrated in the Global North, has led to the development of “universal” standards for fairness and accountability AI, which do not necessarily fit or serve the needs of the local populations in the Global South. In light of these challenges, academia and civil society have responded with criticisms of digital and algorithmic colonialism of the south and shared strategies aimed at decolonising AI. I was commissioned by Tandem to create an illustration that shows the gist of this, for their Tech & Society Dialogues event.
