Acadia Light
by Scott Wurzel
When most think of the United States' national parks, scenes of towering mountains studded with grassy plains filled with buffalo or painted desert landscapes come to mind. But the gentler hills and rugged coasts east of the Mississippi River have their own natural gems. Situated on Mount Desert Island, Acadia National Park in Maine was the National Parks Service's first on the eastern seaboard. It boasts the contiguous 48's first sunrise; and the far northern location guarantees dramatic light.

The island's mountainous interior and rocky shores mean meandering lakes, marshes, and beaches all within a single park. Light paints skies, mirrors lakes, draws on shadows, and occludes forests. My work here is a small sample of this park's character.
