Basic Go Kart Racing Tips

A financial advisor and organizational administrator with a career that has spanned several decades, Keefe Gorman serves as managing director of investments and wealth management advisor with Merrill Lynch offices in Ithaca, New York. When he isn’t working, Keefe Gorman counts go karting among his favorite hobbies.

Whether propelled by gasoline or electricity, go karts are small motor vehicles with four wheels that are generally used for racing or recreational driving. Go karts come in a range of styles and structures, but they all share many of the same performance attributes and limitations.

There are a few important tips for handling those specific performance attributes and limitations. First and foremost, the sports arm of Red Bull recommends keeping both hands securely attached to the kart steering wheel at the “nine and three o’clock” positions at all times. This is particularly important because karts have much more sensitive steering than full-size cars.

The UK indoor karting organization TeamSport suggests centering the driver’s body weight. Drivers who lean into turns place more weight on inside wheels and less on outside wheels, which is counterproductive since it reduces traction. In an effort to maintain a relatively constant top speed at all times, avoid breaking through turns when possible. When a turn requires you to bleed speed, break before the turn, then begin accelerating once again while in the turn.
