Letters from Dad

Hi, Jamie. This morning I was sitting on the sofa having breakfast, when I heard a loud BANG on the dining area window, at the end of the table. I went to see what happened, and saw a big hawk on the driveway below, gasping for breath, it had flown into the window. I gave it time to recover, but it did not, so I went down to see it. I looked as it was breathing slowly. I said, God please let this hawk live, but if it has to die take it into your heavenly kingdom today. The hawk opened its eye, looked at me a couple of seconds, closed its eye, and died. Too bad, it was a beautiful bird I have seen here before. Dad

Hi, Jamie. Rain starts tonight. I was feeling bad about the hawk dying, then this morning I saw a young hawk in the bird feed area, it was looking down over the field, wonder if it is a child of the hawk that died, I have heard young hawk calls lately. See you when you return. Stay safe. Love, Dad

Hi, Jamie. I think you made the best decision, all things considered. I thought after our calls that this is an example of life, one difficult decision after another, that create the path of life, the best course is to always try to do the right thing, considering your interests, and the interests of others who are involved, and being kind to those who are disappointed by the decisions.

I have thought of you and Nelson Mandela for the past week. Your present living situation is humble. But sometimes it is helpful to strip away all of the attachments that life can apply to us, all of the advertising and buying and possessions and keeping up with others, and live in a small place for introspection. A good phase for Mom and I was when we stayed in the basement of the Oregon house, the two of us, and Bowser and Lollipop, and the Spirits that I will tell you about someday. Use this time to think and evaluate and plan.
