Trial by Christopher M. Briggs
Book Design. Published by The Soap Box Press in 2019, 2nd edition in 2021.
Trial (2019) by Christopher M. Briggs, published by The Soap Box is the first novel I had the opportunity to design the cover of. It was nominated for the 2020 Eric Hoffer Book Award and was a finalist for the Eric Hoffer Grand Prize, as well as the First Horizon Award for new authors and the da Vinci Eye Award for cover artwork.
Revising the design and interior typesetting of the book, The Soap Box will be releasing the 2nd Edition of Trial in late 2021.
The historical fiction novel follows the events of the Currie Libel Trial and the perspectives of those directly and indirectly affected by the trial. Sir Arthur Currie sues the Port Hope Evening Guide over an editorial accusing him of needlessly ordering Canadian soldiers to their death at Mons on the last day of the war, thus bringing about one of the key inspirations for the cover’s imagery. The cover depicts a lone soldier passing through a version of No Man’s Land made up of newspapers and discarded papers, borrowing the likeness and imagery of the iconic photographs from WW1.
