DONDO
—
This project is the result of the evolution of a simple idea. An idea drawn from a low tech device that served the function of communication and entertainment in ancient African culture. I set out to visualize a smart speaker inspired by the form and structure of the African talking drum 'the dondo', an instrument that contracts and expands to change its pitch ; imitating the tone of human speech .
It was meant to be a simple concept illustration but then I found myself developing a brand name, designing a logotype, custom patterns and most importantly indulging in a variety of key visual designs. I wasn’t sure where it was going but I let the idea play itself out.
The key visuals were inspired by the drum’s tensioned strings, sound waves and it’s hourglass structure.
The design of the device was inspired by the hourglass-like form of the dondo wooden frame. Taking further inspiration from the drum's usual depiction of African patterns in the form of fabrics, etchings and paintings, I developed custom patterns which were embossed on the lower half of the device.
