Community Recycling Gymnasium: A creative coping strategy towards plastic waste

By: LEUNG Wing Yee, Sardonna | Tutor: Peter Hasdell
In the densely populated land-locked Hong Kong, waste is a complex issue. Waste has one of the highest disposal rate per person at 1.53kg daily. Moreover, 40 million kg of plastic tableware has been disposed to the landfill since the government ban on restaurant dining-in during COVID-19. Our ecosystem and waste capacity is approaching their limits and once the landfill becomes filled by 2024, new solutions need to be found.

“Plastscape” is a narrative project which showcase’s a local and community approach towards a self-motivated, manual recycling strategy. This combines playfulness and engagement with serious social concern as a way to form a mutural beneficial relationship within   community circulation and recycling or repurposing of waste. A building with an alleyway in Tai Kok Tsui has been designed to demonstrate the future possibilities of domestic recycling. With the cooperation between residents, ragpickers and kitchen labour, in using creative contraptions, the community can become engaged in generating recycle products that can feed back to the restaurant and different social parties.
