Throughout its history, Palmyra fell under the rule of multiple empires and cultures. As a result, its architecture combines elements of Greek, Roman, Aramean and Arab styles, making it all the more significant to archeologists and historians, namely Syrian historian Khaled al-Asaad who acted as the unofficial caretaker for the site.

Zanoubia, Queen of Palmyra. She ruled the Roman colony from 267 til 272 AD after her husband Odaenathus and his eldest son (by his former wife), Herodes, were assassinated. She became regent for her own young son Wahballat.
.
Unlike her husband, who settled for ruling the east on behalf of the Roman Empire, Zanoubia was was insatiable. In 269 she seized Egypt, then conquered much of Asia Minor and declared her independence from Rome and even conquered several of Rome’s eastern provinces. She was subjugated by the emperor Aurelian (ruled 270–275) in what today is Ankara, Turkey.
