    Runner-up in the American Batik Design Competition 2013. American Burung-Burung celebrates each of the state birds of the United States. The design draws from the structure of tambal batik in which the badan (main canvas) is compromised of triangles each containing designs created by different artists. In keeping with the collaborative origins of tambal batik as a union of different communities, the individual patches of each bird are cut from the diverse fabric of America, brought together in one united piece. Each square is arranged in alphabetical order according to their state, beginning with Alabama at the top left and running down (top to bottom) by column across to Wyoming at the bottom right. Because many states share birds, only 29 feathers frame the badan. Each feather represents one bird, arranged in alphabetical order by species. Read Less
