'Small Hours' - Graduation Film

Here is our graduation short film 'Small Hours' which I co-directed with Christian Spurling. It is a fully split/mosaic-screen 2D animation short which follows two people's trains of thought, transitioning from one memory to another. As we dive deeper into the memories we transcend into the character's subconscious and loose track of reality. We both directed and storyboarded the entire film, with Christian designing all layouts and backgrounds while I designed characters and was in charge of animation. Here is the teaser of the film and development work from the production stage as well as some final stills from the film.

Character design sheets. The characters are never fully seen in the film so my focus was on their hands and feet and made sure they are distinct and recognisable in their shape and movement.
His designs are edgy and sharp though his movements are slow and gentle to aid the tranquility of the scenes
Her designs are softer with a bit more flow and gesture in the linework
There are many animals throughout the film and these are some design sheets for the ones that needed variations or had most intricate movements in the film.
Very early storyboards from the pre-production stage of the film
