Exhibition design for Hermann Zapf

Class: Intermediate typography | Brief: Concept and design a museum exhibition for a chosen typographer
Deliverables: promotional poster, exhibition art book, digital ads, ticket, print invitation | Audience: Design community, museum goers, type nerds

Background: Hermann Zapf was an iconic typographer whose work is largely associated with classic and calligraphic styles. His career, however, spanned a wide range of typographic developments, from hot metal type all the way up to early digital type. His typefaces include the elegant Zapfino, iconic Optima, and infamous Zapf dingbats.

Concept: This exhibition “Old is Always New” visually bridges the historical trajectory of Zapf’s career by giving nods to current design trends—like mixing calligraphic type with graphic glyphs and bold geometric shapes—and the timelessness of elegant typography in context with digital and interactive design elements (via shapes that reference mobile UI).
