After narrowing our focus to street food vendors, we conducted a survey to help determine the main materials being used for current packaging solutions. This revealed an alarming number of plastic and styrofoam products, along with the bamboo skewer as the utensil of choice. Further materials research yielded the findings of soy ink and bamboo pulp as suitable emerging materials that are both biodegradable and renewable in the local climate.

 

After the design overhaul was resolved and a final design was made, which surpassed any previous drafts, the process models were tested for strength and usability. Once this was finished, a final set of functional products were made to be brought to the streets and tested in real use. Our group took the products down to the vendors at the peak hour of business in the Sham Shui Po district of Hong Kong. Immediately they grabbed many peoples attention, standing out among the other packaging already being used. When handed to the vendors to fill with food they were completey accepting in using it and shocked when we flipped down the sauce cup for easy dipping. All products including the skewer, medium cup, and large cup were tested with various different foods and sauces, at many vendors in the area. Being able to see the packaging we had developed used and accepted by the local 'Hong Kongers' was the most rewarding part of this expereince.
