Anne of Green Gables: Conceptual Book Covers
Book Cover Mock-ups (from left to right) Designer's Choice, Physical Element, and Typography.
Bosom Friends
Designer's Choice Mock-up: I created this design on the app procreate. Anne of Green Gables is a beautiful coming of age story. Anne is always getting into mischief with her best friend Diana. Their friendship is one of the most important aspects of this story. Anne and Diana often walk around the beautiful countryside of Avonlea together.
Daydreamer
Physical Element Mock-up: I created this design by photographing my younger sister. Anne is always daydreaming, and she has a big imagination. Anne gets into trouble on more than one occasion for reading rather than doing her chores. Anne is a highly intelligent girl, I wanted this design to reflect her personality.
Delightful Nature
Typography Mock-up: For this design I wanted to capture the beauty of Prince Edward Island, often considered the most beautiful place in Canada. Anne loves to enjoy the outdoors, sometimes while reciting poems. Anne often picks wild flowers, and imagines what it would be like to sleep in a tree. I made this design by layering many different images of plants and animals over the words, Anne of Green Gables.
The Assignment
For this assignment we were instructed to create three separate book covers for a classic novel. The three designs had to be created using one of each of these three different methods: typography, physical elements, and designer's choice. I chose to design book covers to represent the book, Anne of Green Gables. The typography method involved creating a concept using only typography; in a clever and conceptual way. We also had to create a physical element book cover; which could be constructed from physical materials that can be assembled, collaged, photographed, or scanned for the final cover art. The last category designer's choice could be developed in any style or format.
About the Book
Anne of Green Gables is a beautiful story written by L.M. Montgomery. It is set in the late 1800's, on the beautiful Prince Edward Island, Canada. This story is both a romance, and a coming of age story.
Summary
Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert are unmarried siblings who live together on a farm called Green Gables. The farm is located in the small town of Avonlea, Prince Edward Island, Canada. Matthew is getting too old to handle all of the farm work by himself. Consequently, the Cuthberts decide to adopt a young orphan boy to assist him with the farm chores. Matthew arrives at the train station to pick up the orphan boy, only to find that a young girl, named Anne Shirley, had been sent by mistake. Matthew decides to take her home, and on the way, becomes charmed by the sweet talkativness of the young girl. At first Marilla is upset because of the mistake; after all, they had no use for a girl. Marilla even goes so far as to attempt to return her to the orphanage, but she too becomes enchanted by Anne’s sweetness. Marilla agrees to let Anne stay after a short trial period. Anne grew up impoverished as an orphan, and she lacks social graces and education. Anne hates her red hair, and she often gets into trouble because she lives in a fantasy. Anne attends a local picnic with the Cuthberts, where she befriends Diana Barry. She and Diana become bosom friends, and get into all sorts of trouble together. Anne also holds a terrible grudge against a handsome, smart boy named Gilbert Blythe. They first met at school, where he teased her by calling her Carrots. She screamed at him and smashed a slate over his head; this lead to a rivalry between Anne and Gilbert, the two smartest kids in school. Anne befriends many other people such as Miss Stacy, and Diana’s Aunt Josephine. As Anne matures she thrives academically and accomplishes many things.
