Recommended Treatment for Atrial Fibrillation

A former San Diego, California resident Sanjiv Narayan, M.D. splits his time between serving as a professor of medicine at Stanford University and on the editorial team of several cardiology and electrophysiology-focused journals. Cardiologist Sanjiv M. Narayan, Ph.D. maintains a professional interest in atrial fibrillation, a major global health problem that costs billions of dollars a year.

According to a 2021 study published in the Journal of the Neurological Sciences, about 52.4 percent of patients in rural areas with atrial fibrillation did not receive treatment consistent with recommendations from the American College of Cardiology, American Heart Association, and Heart Rhythm Society.

To complete the study, researchers surveyed 1,062 patients who had been diagnosed with atrial fibrillation and experienced an ischemic stroke later on. These patients also largely had a CHA2DS2-VASc score of at least two, indicating a higher risk of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and congestive heart failure.

The results showed that very few patients were not treated this way despite being eligible for oral anticoagulants. Those patients who were undertreated experienced stroke soon after their atrial fibrillation diagnosis. They were also most likely to visit the doctors during the year and had a higher risk of experiencing other thromboembolisms.
