Unfortunately, some procedures are not required to be performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon. Instead, they can be performed by a physician in another specialty with a certification gained through weekend courses. Sometimes, you may not even be dealing with a doctor at all, but an esthetician or other non-medical personnel.

While procedures offered by non-board certified plastic surgeons are often cheaper, that savings comes at the cost of training and experience warns the Seduction Cosmetic Center.

A board-certified plastic surgeon must be certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS). The ABPS is the only board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties.

To be certified by the ABPS, the plastic surgeon in question must have five years of approved surgical training, including a plastic surgery residency. They must also pass rigorous oral and written exams.

There are several benefits to working with a board-certified plastic surgeon, says the Seduction Cosmetic Center. Firstly, you are guaranteed to be working with a surgeon who has at least five years of specialty schooling and experience in the field. The more experienced and educated your surgeon is, the more likely your surgery is to turn out the way you want.

Board-certified plastic surgeons are also required to complete continuing education, which means they're up-to-date on the latest technology and procedures in treatment and recovery.

Another benefit of working with a true board-certified surgeon is that they are required to operate only in accredited facilities. This means that when you work with a board-certified plastic surgeon, you can be sure that your environment is completely up to code for surgical procedures.

How To Tell If Your Doctor Is a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon

Did you know that most states allow any doctor to call themselves a plastic surgeon or cosmetic surgeon whether or not they have trained as a plastic surgeon? Sometimes, they're not required to have any surgical training at all.

Even worse, many doctors confuse the issue by calling themselves "board-certified". Which they are in their field--just not in plastic surgery. Be sure to ask your doctor if they are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. They are legally required to answer honestly or it's considered malpractice.

You can also use the American Board of Plastic Surgery's website to look up your surgeon and confirm their certification, advises Seduction Cosmetic Center.
