Seasonal allergies fall under the term "atopy" in the context of cats and dogs. Atopy results from inhaled pollen, mold, and dust particles. Just as in humans, these allergies cause symptoms ranging from annoying to debilitating. However, allergy symptoms in animals differ from those in humans, which means pet owners may not notice the problem.

Most often, allergies present in pets as skin conditions that encourage behaviors such as chronic scratching and chewing of common problem areas, including the paws and flanks.
