Synopsis

The San Cristobal Gymnastics Arena was the conceptual and functional evolution of its predecessor, the San Carlos Gymnastics Arena that was built in 2003. It is designed with a maximum height of 16.01 meters and a seat capacity of 1,568 spectators in permanent stands, which can be increased to 2,200 spectators using detachable telescopic bleachers that can be placed in the north and south sides of the public access level.

It has a gross building area of 8,238m2 and like its predecessor it resembles a soft artificial hill, defined by a broad stepped roof built from insulating sheets and a light metallic tubular structure, arched in both directions. The domed structure defines a spacious interior with a rectangular base, without columns, of 102 x 66 meters, with controlled natural lighting and ventilation through the purposely-designed staggered roof sections.

The tropical vegetation and openings located throughout the inner perimeter create a natural microclimate, generating natural ascending ventilation that lowers the temperature of the inner environment, while also softening the exterior daylight. These garden edges also delimit the main entrance and emergency exits, isolate the arena from external view and noises, and prevent the dazzling of athletes, enabling full concentration in the gymnastic performance. This eliminates the need for mechanical air conditioning and air extraction.
