MCMLXXXVII COLLECTION - Part 1
Last year, we had the pleasure to work with Modu Studio on their new furniture collection.
We enjoyed working on this collection that we decided to publish the first 3 items here, that are now available to purchase on
modu.nyc.
We will share the rest as soon as we can 😉

We hope you will like it as much as we do !

Behind the scene
The Carved Wood pattern

We wanted to go with the modeling route for this one, but down the line we would need to make the same pattern repeatedly for multiple items, so we decided to create the material in Substance Designer.
Here is a breakdown for the setup
cells node > adjustments> Flood fill> adjustments >directional wrap>diffuse map
The fireplace Logs
We love doing things procedurally when possible, so it was a a great opportunity to build a tyFlow setup to arrange those logs .
Being a perfectionists, we started moving them around manually to get the exact balance that we have in mind.
The melted metal
We wanted a flexible setup for those melted metal legs, as we needed to keep changing them to test different shapes and do the same later for other items.
tyFlow again was the answer, and with its VDB capability, we were able to convert few basics, separate models, into one smooth metal surface.
After that, we took the result and did the retopology using the Quad Remesher plugin ( we didn't have a Retopology modifier back then ). We did that to get proper edge flow for better deformation and UV Unwrap later.

The Swing ropes (suede fringe)
We started initially with Ornatrix, and we got decent results, but we needed more control over the length and distribution, so we went back to tyFlow and built this simple setup which allowed us to control that using few clicks.
Lighting

We really enjoy playing with lights to paint the space with light and shadows in an artistic and more controlled way .

For this scene we've used mainly a cloudy HDRIs plus  soft Corona sun for the general lighting. Then we added few softboxes and a reflector to highlight specific parts of the image .

Breakdown for the post-production
I did a live session for this project in my rendering workshop and those were the most asked questions. let me know if you have any other questions that I might missed in the comments below  .
