Jerry Is Shy - Illustration Children Storybook

This is the children storybook that I created during year 2 trimester 3 of my university study. And here is my design rationale for the book.
Design Rationale

“Jerry Is Shy” is inspired by a storybook title “Too Shy for Story and Tell” by Beth Bracken. I chose this kind of story because I am a shy kid when I was a child. Also, the target audience of my storybook is aimed at the kids of 3 to 5-year-old because I think the kids at this age are learning to express themselves to others.

“Jerry Is Shy” is about a shy boy, Jerry overcame the psychological barriers and finally brave to sing in front of people. This story aims to encourage the shy kid to bravely face the crowd. The genre of this story is realistic fiction which is a story that could happen in real life but it uses a fictional character. The moral values of this story are kind and brave. I explore the inspirational theme in this storybook because I hope that the kids can have the courage to express themselves to the public.

The design concept of this storybook is the big head with small body characters, the clean illustration and the simple storyline. In my opinion, the kids are not easier to stay focusing for a long time. Therefore, the clean illustration and the simple storyline are made to not distract kids' attention, and both of them can let kids read within their focusing time.

The front and back cover are focused on Jerry and aim to bring out the ‘shy’ theme to the readers. The front cover is only Jerry and gradient background to make focus on Jerry. It also brings a sense of loneliness and loss. The back cover is Jerry hide behind an object to make him looks shy. The overall color tone of the background is mainly soft and dim while the character used vibrant color to make the contrast.

Hope you can enjoy it! :)
