This was a group senior design project for the UCLA MAE senior class that I completed. I give credit to my colleagues, professor, and our TA for all their help in completing this fun project.
The Oscillating Water Columns mounted at the side of the reservoir entrance are designed to harvest energy by passing air through a Wells turbine. See the following images below, as water rises in the water column air pressure builds up and forces the air through the Wells turbine. When the water lowers it sucks air through the Wells turbine back into the chamber. The Wells turbine is specifically designed to rotate in one direction regardless of the air flow direction.
