Forest Service Aims to Get More Children in the Woods

A financial professional and former economics professor, Joseph “Joe” Petry joined Mayfair Financial as a business consultant and financial analyst in 2015. As a hiking enthusiast, Joseph Petry takes a particular interest in making outdoor spaces accessible for everyone, including children.

With more than 80 percent of the United States population living in cities, many children lack access to parks and natural areas. Combined with an increasingly sedentary lifestyle, this disconnect from nature negatively impacts both physical and emotional health. Additionally, children who have no relationship to nature will be unlikely to prioritize conservation or sustainable land use in the future.

To deal with this problem, the Forest Service operates ongoing initiatives that aim to reignite children’s interest in and connection to nature. Through its More Kids in the Woods program, the Forest Service organizes trips to the forest and creates downtown green spaces that brings the forest directly to kids.
