Safe & Secure - Design Thesis

An app to anonymously report sexual assault and prioritize safety on college campuses.

Safe & Secure is an anonymous reporting and education application designed for victims of sexual assault between ages 18-25. With the consideration that victims may not feel comfortable reporting such traumatic experiences to a stranger, Safe & Secure provides users with the ability to create a secure and anonymous report that is immediately sent to the police. Along with the reporting aspect, we focus on educating audiences on sexual assault through campaigns centred on education and targeted towards post-secondary audiences.

Other functions include a SafetyWatch feature where users are able to share their live location while travelling, similar to a Campus Walk and Ride Share with Uber.
We came to the decision for a thumbprint logo to symbolize the biometrics of unlocking your phone through a thumbprint ID. The individuality of a thumbprint is significant, and can be related to the uniqueness of every individual’s experience with trauma, instead of feeling like a statistic.

For the type, we went with a clean and smooth typeface to represent the ease of the reporting feature and its gentle approach. While going with a sans-serif may be an obvious choice, we did not want to downplay the importance of the app. We instead chose to go with a serif to cultivate a sense of professionalism and seriousness.
For our colour palette we felt it was important to keep the severity of the situation always in mind. While not trying to create an app with inappropriate colours, we came to the conclusion that focusing on skin tones was the best way to go.

For contrast purposes we included shades of blue which can be found in the SafeWatch feature.

To blend all of our primary colours creates a sense of unity and community. The backgrounds are able to be combined with each other using different opacities. The gradients also create a frosted glass effect demonstrating a feeling of transparency with our reporting feature.
Humanizing the reporting process was our number one priority. To create this feeling, we included a disclaimer pointing before starting the report. We take the form one question at a time to not overwhelm the user. The background seamlessly transitions between each other and invoke a sense of tranquility. We included the option to skip the questions if the answer is unknown or would like to be filled out later.
Besides our main function, we created a location feature similar to in-person campus walks that many college campuses provide. Instead we are using police dispatchers to anonymously track your location if desired to ensure you arrive to your destination safely and successfully.
Including an education portion in our app was very important to us. This function will be updated regularly with new resources for victims of sexual assault as well as including how to help victims.
For the second deliverable we are focusing on a social media campaign on Instagram. With over 20.6% of users being between 18-24, this hits our target audience spot on.
While many posts can include encouraging our audience to use our app and report when they feel most comfortable, we also focus on educating students on topics about consent and sexual assault awareness.
