Independent Study in Gamification of Fingerspelling
My role: UI & UX Designer.
Tools User: Figma, Invision.
Supervisor: Rosalee Wolfe, The American Sign Language Research Lab at DePaul University.
Design of a mobile application from a currently existing prototype for a fingerspelling game. Work was done with the ASL Avatar Project team to integrate this app and permit a user to learn fingerspelling in real-time on an avatar.
Overview
Old Version

An existing prototype design made by a previous ASL Research Student was used to inspire the redesign of a new and modern style of learning about fingerspelling.

Brainstorming

We wanted the application to resemble a camera view, so it would feel like users could interact in real life with Paula. Applications like Snapchat, Instagram, and TikTok were used for inspiration.
Low-Fidelity Sketches

Two sets of sketches were conceived to mimic the previously mentioned applciation. These two would entail a different user flow and interface environment for the avatar, Paula, to exist and interact with the users. In the end, Option B was picked to be explored further into a high fidelity prototype.
UI Style Guide

The following is a breakdown of the style elements used in the high-fidelity prototype completed in the fall term of 2020 . These are subject to change in accordance with the future implementation of the interface, as well as future revisions that may happen.

High-Fidelity Prototype

A high-fidelity prototype was conceived as culmination of the project. The overall design is meant to give it a modern look, using a dark theme and as well as rethinking the game design of a digital language-learning site to give it a structure that is fairly similar to a mobile camera app.
Final Thoughts

During my senior year, I wanted to go out of my comfort zone and explore new areas of the UX industry within educational institutions. I got the opportunity to work alongside faculty members and graduate studetns at the ASL Research Lab in DePaul University.

The team gave me a lot of freedom on making creative choices and design, yet it also meant I had greater responsability over the final product. The ASL Avatar Team wanted a new way to reach out to a community of students in a familiar environment. Using a mobile application and have it resemble a camera app would enhance the interaction with the avatar, Paula.

The project is currently being implemented by the back-end team as they try to integrate the avatar into the application.
