Project Description (THCA—2021)
"36 Days of Type is a project that invites designers, illustrators, and graphic artists to express their particular interpretation of the 26 letters and 10 numbers of the Latin alphabet. A yearly open call exploring the creative boundaries of letterforms, where participants are challenged to design a letter or number each day for 36 consecutive days, as a global and simultaneous act showing the outcome of the ability to represent the same symbols from thousands of different perspectives. A project that aims to be a space for creation around typography and its endless graphic possibilities."
‘It’s the tool, not the hand, that makes the form’
For the 8th edition of 36DaysOfType (2021), I used my own custom-made tools which I have been developing since 2018. The idea for these tools derives from a geometric variable typeface 'ArTypoFont' I designed, including the proportions, weights, and the letter shapes themselves.
I aim to use the possibilities that these brushes give me for making letter shapes. Therefore, I reject handling them just like any other drawing tool; instead I embrace the restrictions. Letting the tools find their own visual language helps me to explore new forms of letters.
