Forbidden Rhythms

On the stage, the seven women seem to transform into the traditional Cambodian instruments as they deliver a powerful performance every night. Backstage, however, they have their bags filled with bits and bobs, along with the struggles of living in a patriarchal society. Their group stands out as they are the first few females in Cambodia who have learned to play these Khmer drums, traditionally played only by men. But also because they share a deep sense of sisterhood, which is evident from the songs they perform with such conviction that the beats seem to move something within you.

They channelize their individual struggles and sacrifices to their songs. Many of them have left their homes and loved ones to pursue their passion. They say, "The journey was perilous but, it helped them to create a space where women can empower each other." The stage is their world and, backstage a safe haven.
A sudden tremble can be felt standing on the stage which moves with the energy of their Khmer songs and the bass of the drums makes your heartbeat sync with their tunes which speaks of women standing up for themselves and moving forward in life.
