The Canopy
Public Pavilion for a Proposed Farm
The Canopy Pavilion is a public gathering space for a (studio) proposed demonstration farm in Boulder, CO.  The design of the structure encourages interaction with the building’s natural and built environment by providing opportunites for exploration through views and circulation.  The pavilion mimics the beauty in the organization and organic nature of an orchard while still providing a connection to the urban surroundings.
Lying alongside the intersection of two major pedestrian paths, the pavilion is both a way station and a destination.  Visitors have a clear view into and beyond the pavilion from all locations on the paths.
The Canopy acts as a gateway for the existing art exhibition to the West but also as a gazebo for the public.  The form is derived from an examination of nature and encourages visitors to explore the farm as they do the building.  Large glass panels display the artificial orchard while also creating a more intimate space within the container.  The central path connects the pavilion to the site and entices visitors to discover the rest of the demonstration farm.
A covered patio surrounds the southern and western ends of the pavilion and focuses attention toward the public field as an open area for play and relaxation.
