Digital Literacy Final Portfolio
The strengths in this first vlog is it ticks all the learning objectives, it helped develop my multidisciplinary approaches for examining the cultural, political, and economic dimensions of networked information technologies by making me realize the big issues of social media using data and information for profit. It gave me the understanding of the interrelationship between networked information technologies (like social media) and emerging practices (data collection) in the production and circulation of information and culture by showing how the emergence of data capitalism led to the creations of algorithms when these sites saw it potential for profit and trying to pass it off as said culture and progress. And the vlog material helped strengthen my capabilities in digital literacy through practical engagement, (from researching the topic for the vlog) relating to the topic with media creation tools and publishing work online (like the articles I read relating to the subject). The weaknesses the vlog had was looking at the issue from a scholarly view and not as a real-world issue that relates to me as well, which makes understanding of the subject easier to grasp. I would’ve done this approach differently by looking at it from humanitarian perspective than scholarly one.
This vlog also meets all of the course objectives I again developed multidisciplinary approaches for examining the cultural, political, and economic dimensions of networked information technologies as by learning about the intricate jungle of information that Snowden exposed the internet as. This vlog especially helped me develop an understanding of the interrelationship between networked information technologies and the emerging practice of again data collection but this time by government agencies in the production and circulation of information and culture, but as a controlling means. And this one did somewhat strengthen my capabilities in digital literacy through practical engagement with media creation tools (by analyzing Snowden’s expertise in coding) and publishing work online (the documentary). The weaknesses I had in the vlog were not focusing on Snowden himself as he is a figured to be well understood if you want to get a better idea of how individuals play a role in the digital world. I keep isolating people from technology as two separate forces when to get a better understanding of technology I need to see people and our interaction with said technology makes us a part of the machine. When I started to understand that technology and people go hand in hand it allowed me a better understanding technology.
This last one had one of the most interesting subjects to study. It also checks all the marks with developing multidisciplinary approaches for examining the cultural, political, and economic dimensions of networked information technologies, in this case the networked technologies being the whole developed world. The book gave a likely scenario which developed an understanding of the interrelationship between networked information technologies and emerging practices in the production and circulation of information and culture with the make believe spex, which could be related to the smartphone. And it strengthened capabilities in digital literacy more through publishing work online than through practical engagement with media creation tools although the piece gives an understanding of how these creation tools work. I guess my weaknesses in this one were the opposite of the issues I’ve had in the previous vlogs. Where this time my focus is on how a technological world effects human rights and not its impact on the world itself. I think because of this I lose sight of the important notes to highlight from the text; which shows the potential for an interconnected world when its working properly without people having to loose their human rights in the process of this world being built.
