Academiestraat, Ghent

The city of Ghent wishes to re-develop the old fire-fighters site into a new housing project.

With the project ‘Academiestraat’ I was part of the brainstorm team for a mixed-use project in Ghent. In a historical part of the city an old industrial site has to be reconverted to housing; social and private, a museum space, artist in residence ateliers, office spaces and public, semi-public and private outdoor spaces. The challenge was not to create one closed block, but to continue the natural flow of small streets, parks and housing blocs of a historical city as Ghent in a new project.
